SMUD Impersonators Article and Adopt-A-Park Day!!
SMUD warns of persons impersonating utility staff
Published: Friday, Sep. 6, 2013 - 10:21 am
The Sacramento Municipal Utility District is warning customers to be careful of individuals impersonating SMUD staff, following reports in Elk Grove.
Utility officials said the Elk Grove Police Department informed SMUD that residents in its jurisdiction reported men knocking on their doors and falsely identifying themselves as SMUD employees, needing access to their backyards.
Residents told police that the men said they needed to check access for future installation of power poles. One resident said one of the men tried to open the front door, but it was locked.
Officials said the public can verify a utility employee by calling SMUD at (916) 452-3211. SMUD also is asking customers to report any unusual activity in their neighborhoods.
SMUD said that field crews carry photo identification cards at all times, and many wear uniforms. Officials suggested that the public ask SMUD workers to show identification.
Call The Bee's Mark Glover, (916) 321-1184.
Volunteer Adopt-A-Park
Help us keep our parks clean and safe! Every year the district coordinates volunteer workdays for park residents to help out. Just a few hours of your time can make a HUGE difference in the parks. Projects include weeding, raking, trash pick-up, and other duties as needed.
Our next work day will be Saturday September 14 from 8:30-11:30am. If you are interested in doing clean up on another day please tracy@carmichaelpark.com or call (916) 485-5322×23.
Remember Jan Park friends, we need your help to keep our area beautiful! Please join us in the park this coming Saturday morning to help with the following agenda items Olivia and Jerry Epler from the Park District have worked out together to help deal with some of the concerns raised previously:
So what’s on the agenda?
· I am very excited about this clean-up day—I spoke to Jerry from Carmichael Recreation and Park District and I mentioned to him the issue with people spending the night at the park and hiding and leaving trash at the south end of the park. So our idea to address this on-going issue is to introduce a new trail at the south end of the park and trim non-Oak vegetation (mostly weeds). I would love to get as many volunteers to help with this project. We need all the help we can get.
· I enjoy taking my dog out for walks around the trails but I don’t enjoy the dog poop people’s dogs leave behind. I will take a few minutes to pick up the poop throughout the park. Any help is appreciated.
· Weeds near the children’s area needs clearing. We need volunteers please bring your kids to help out and enjoy the playground :)
· We need to pick up trash throughout the park.
· We also need help making sure we remove any tagging (writing) on tables or signs. We like our park beautiful and clean.

Animal Control - Snake Scam
Apparently some cons are posing as animal control officers to access the homes of elderly people under the guise of searching for snakes. Here’s an article from The Sacramento Bee that is worth sending to your friends, relatives and clients over age 55:A so-called "snake scam" has spread from the Bay area to Roseville, police said.
Burglars posing as animal control officers knocked on the doors of at least two homes in Roseville on Monday. The fake animal control officers asked to check the property for poisonous snakes.
In the first instance, about 3:45 p.m. Monday, a woman wearing brown clothes resembling an animal control uniform asked the Chancellor Avenue resident if she could check the yard for snakes. Her request was denied because the resident was aware of a Bay area snake scam and didn't let her in the house.
According to the San Jose Mercury News, elderly residents in Fremont, Union City, Hayward and San Mateo were visited by a man or a woman claiming to be with animal control.
The fake animal control officers in the Bay area said they needed to check the property for snakes or trim a neighbor's tree. While the phony animal control officer distracted the homeowner in the backyard, an accomplice burglarized the homes.
Roseville police said that about 5 p.m. Monday the scam was tried again, this time at a home in the area of Cirby Way and Inglis Drive. The visitor said she was from Roseville Animal Control and that she needed to check the property due to an infestation of poisonous snakes.
She asked the homeowners to accompany her to the backyard where the fake animal control officer measured a shed. She then told the residents that someone would return to set some traps.
Later, according to Roseville police, the residents discovered items missing from their home. Police suspect that an accomplice of the fake animal control officer went into the home while the residents were pre-occupied in the back yard by the shed-measuring scam artist.
The fake animal control officer was described as a Hispanic woman in her late 20s or early 30s, about 5 feet 3 inches tall with a stocky build and dark, shoulder-length hair. She wore a navy blue button-up shirt with the City of Roseville logo and khaki pants.
Roseville police note that it is very unusual for city or other utility workers to make unsolicited visits. If anyone claiming to be a city or utility worker visits and service has not been requested, be on guard.
Police advise resident in those cases to call the number of the city department or utility to find out if workers have been sent to the neighborhood. Don't call a number provided by the possible scammer.
Missing pup seen in our area
The veterinary assistant from Blue Cross Pet Hospital has been going door-to-door tonight passing out fliers regarding the small lost dog in the attached flyer. The owner was in the hospital and the dog got out when a family member was house sitting. The reason they are concerned as there have been sightings in the last week behind Barrett school, on Maple Lane and Rustic and near O'Donnell Park. His name is Tino and he is a miniature greyhound so PLEASE DO NOT CHASE.
