Recent calls to law enforcement that folks should know about are:

- Young adults setting off bottle rockets around 9:30 p.m. on 7/15-sheriff's helicopter responded
- Silver sedan with homeless gentleman frequenting the park for the last several months parking on Jan Drive and using the port-a-potty. Confirmed with vendor responsible for cleaning the port-a-potty possession of pornographic material on the man.
- One older caucasian man with white long beard, one african american younger (30's) man, and one red/brunette haired caucasian female in her 40's/50's riding bikes in park with lots of collected materials with them. Hostile and aggressive to visitors in the park and neighbors. Sheriff's Dept. responded, but group had left before they arrived.
- Bikes stolen from carport near park between 6-11 p.m. in the last 10 days.

Please please call the sheriff's dept. if you see or hear any suspicious behavior and many thanks to our active neighbors who make the difference in keeping our neighborhood safe.

Meet Up with Susan Peters

Dear Friends,

In 2005 I started holding “Office Hours” at various venues around the Third District.  It is now an annual tradition with me setting up a table at selected community events where residents can drop by and talk about items of interest with no appointment necessary.
This coming Thursday night, July 19, I will be holding another “Office Hours” from 6-7 pmprior to the free Fair Oaks Thursday Night Concert in the Park.  Please feel free to stop by before the concert begins at 7 pm to talk about items of interest with no appointment necessary on a “first come basis.”
The concert will be held at Village Park, 4238 Main Street, featuring the John Skinner Band.  Before the show, I will have a table set up to visit with residents.
 “Office Hours” for 2014 began in March at the annual trout fishing derby held in Howe Park followed in April at the Carmichael Egg Hunt.  In addition to this month’s visit to Fair Oaks, I plan to hold other “Office Hours” at other venues and I will post those dates and locations on my webpage.

Please be very careful this holiday, particularly with the record drought conditions we are experiencing. CalFire will be strictly enforcing all ordinances and aggressively responding to illegal firework holders. Everyone's safety is in your hands, so do be sure to stay cool and comfortable while you celebrate, but most of all, be sure to be safe and encourage fire safety around you.

Fire Danger is High this 4th of July!

Serious injuries and millions of dollars in property loss happen each year from wildfires sparked by fireworks. This year's extreme drought poses a particular threat for devastating wildfires throughout all of California.

California has a zero tolerance for the sale and use of illegal fireworks. Illegal fireworks include sky rockets, bottle rockets, roman candles, aerial shells, firecrackers and other types that explode, go into the air, or move on the ground in an uncontrollable manner. It is illegal to sell, transport, or use fireworks that do not carry the “Safe and Sane” seal, as well as possess or use any fireworks in a community where they are not permitted. If convicted, a violator could be fined up to $50,000 as well as sent to jail for up to one
year. There are nearly 300 communities within California that allow “Safe and Sane” fireworks.

Fireworks Safety Tips:

• Use only State Fire Marshal approved fireworks
• Local ordinances should be verified before purchasing and/or using fireworks
• Always read directions
• Always have an adult present
• Use fireworks outdoors only
• Never use near dry grass or other flammable materials
• Light one at a time
• Have a bucket of water and a hose handy

Fireworks Injury Prevention Safety Tips:

• Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse
• Back up several feet immediately after lighting fireworks
• Never point or throw fireworks at another person
• Never experiment with fireworks
• Never attempt to re-light or “fix” fireworks
• Do not wear loose fitting clothing
• Never carry fireworks in your pockets
• Fireworks are not toys

Hello Everyone in Carmichael,

1.       Our next Sheriff Community meeting for Carmichael is Sept 16^th.  We hope that you can attend.

2.       National Night Out is next month on August 5^th.  If you are interested in participating, please sign up and return the application right away.

3.       All Outdoor Marijuna grows are now completely illegal.

4.       Panhandlers  no longer can beg or request money from you and they can not approach you in places where you are vulnerable;  this includes gas stations, intersections, bank ATMs, check cashing businesses, entrances to parking lots,  medians or sidewalk within 200 feet of an intersection, bus stops, light rail stations, or anytime that you are in your car; where ever you are.

Suspicious behavior, loitering in the park, vandalism/graffiti, dumping, and alcohol/drug use at Jan Park

I am very sorry to report friends and neighbors that with the warm weather comes problems in the park. As many of you have seen, we had a very sad experience of having graffiti sprawled all over our rock park signs and the new message board at the Slate/Jan entrance recently. With a lot of work and care by the Carmichael Recreation and Park District folks, much of it has been cleaned up, but I know it was an upsetting shock for many of us.

I also wanted to let everyone know that a recent request to the Carmichael Recreation and Park District was made and performed to remove a park table and bench set from the far end near Ranger Way due to excessive use of the table as a "hang out" space for young adults who were habitually dumping trash from cars, using alcohol and drugs, communicating about future drug deals, and entering the park after hours. Several calls were made to the Sheriff's Dept regarding this activity (one of the individuals lives in the neighborhood), and we hope that the removal of the table will reduce the congregating for less than pleasant purposes :) As always, please call the non-emergency Sheriff's Dept number to report activity of this type, and let us know here so we can report repeated activity to the Carmichael Park District to request a ranger.

6/24/2014:
Came out to find a white woman early 30s and a Hispanic man in 30s as we'll, with totes, crates, mounds of trash and what appears to be household items in boxes and packages. Most of there stuff piled on sidewalk, as the lady tried to stuff several things into a very jammed trunk, to which she couldn't get the lid closed as it spilled over, with trash sitting on curb. While she feverishly worked on jamming this stuff, the gentlemen suspiciously walked down the sidewalk, with head looking nervously in every direction, and out of the park towards Manzanita and neighborhood on far side of jan park. He came back shortly later carrying two brown bags with what looked to be empty milk cartoons and a white rod. He asked if I had a problem and I said "yes, actually I do!" I told him and her I was tired of people pulling into neighborhood and leaving piles of trash. I said I've never seen them in our neighborhood and their behavior was very suspicious that time of the day. She said she would find a trash can. The whole thing was bazaar, and it truly looked like they had either grabbed stuff out of garages or had been dumpster diving. I drove down the block and parked and 10 minutes later they passed me. They did take their trash with them but beware about leaving garage doors open. Lots of questionable activity when lots of us our rushing out the door to work and easily distracted and in a hurry.



We need your help making sure we keep the park safe by being a part of the Jan Park Watch. Please report here, via email to Olivia or Carmen, or on Nextdoor any suspicious behavior or signs of vandalism, camping, loitering, drug/alcohol use in the park and be sure to contact the Sheriff's Dept. on the non-emergency number 874-5115 or 911 for crimes in progress. If we all are active, present, and responsive, we know that we can keep our neighborhood clean, safe, and beautiful for all of us to enjoy. Fourth of July -Pet Reminders!

Hi friends,

Just wanted to remind you to be really careful with your animals this upcoming holiday and make sure they are secure and safe. The animal shelters get filled every 4th with animals that panic and run because of the fireworks surrounding our Independence Day. Please share this little reminder with friends and neighbors and have a safe and happy 4th of July!
